Very Nervous Systems

Dear Colleagues,

I want to apologise for the sarcasm I used in this blog post and any inference that I feel all the hard work you have been doing is a waste of time. On reflection, I think I have erred in the way I have written this post. I also have confused some by posting under the subject of Ethics. I meant this in the abstract sense of Communication being an important Ethic, not that people have made poor ethical choices (they have not).

Collaborate

Douglass recently told me about a great product called Gobby. Gobby uses the obby protocol to allow multiple users to chat online and edit documents AT THE SAME TIME! Yes - people can type at the same time in the same document.

Poll!

I can't get the poll facility on this blog to work for me. Anyway I have a poll here, if you have seconds to waster please let me know what OS you are using as your MAIN Desktop. Click here: Operating System Poll

Try something new!

On Monday we were having a Skype conference for the YWAM KB and Steve needed to reboot his Vista Laptop... (of course) Anyway it was a frustrating wait for the rest of us let alone Steve. Now I have been suggesting he installs Linux on his machine and regains the speed and productivity he seems to be lacking these days. Yet that is a big jump.

Linux Printing

Printing with Linux can be a joy and a pain at times. It is a pain when a printer really has not been designed with Linux as a platform in mind. However, it can be a joy when a printer is quickly and simply found and then networked so easily with other computers! The latest Ubuntu Gutsy will automatically search out and install printers. I tried this on a recent install and it worked really well!

Virtual Machine

I don't know whether any of you use Virtual Machines much? I have been mucking around with them for a bit and they can be great fun as you can set up a test operating system and play around with it. Most enable you to surf the net etc. I have been playing with VirtualBox and had a lot of fun.

Captive Portal?

Douglass was having trouble posting on this forum today (I don't think he has permission yet to post - can someone correct his?) so I am helping him, but this is his question:

I am about to start a project here at YWAM Nashville to spread wifi access our campus. One of the requirements that have been set for this project is that students cannot access the Internet during class times or after a certain time at night.

Backing up...

I was saddened to get an email from Stephe and Rite Mayers who were robbed whilst on holiday in Israel just recently. They seem fine now and have the passports sorted and money issues dealt with but Stephe lost ALL his data.
