Well it's cool and sexy, but what will the iPhone do to the future of telecommunication? I just love it when companies come out with new and amazing techologies that make our lives so much easier, and then don't sell them for another six months! NOT! Apple is very good at this, but to be fair they do keep the rest of the computer and digital communication companies scrambling to "catch up" with the results of their R and D investment. I like the iPhone and I probably will buy one, but the most interesting thing to me is what kind of reaction this is going to create among the top mobile smart phone corporations! I would have loved to be a fly on the corporate strategy room walls when the iPhone was revealed. I bet their were a few explatives, and shouts to "...quick, pull out that technology that we were going to release in two years! Blankity, blank, blank that Apple...". Well, what do you guys think? Are you ready to throw away your blackberries, Treos, or O2s?

I love how it looks and it's features. I agree that everyone else is probably scrambling now to compete with that look alone. Sort of like Windows finally getting a system that looks more like Linux & MAC LOL! I'm one of those people that like all my things working together. Universal remotes were a very smart item, but I'm not sure how universal they really are since I still see people with a basket full of remotes! Anyway, I have a MacBook now and I've been wanting an iPod 'cause that's what goes best with my MacBook right?! And now with the idea of getting my phone, my iPod and PDA, etc capabilities all in one place has got me sold for sure. I'm sure I won't like the cost, so I'll wait until the first year of two and let everyone else test it out, get the bugs out and a reduction in the price, but for sure I'll get one :).

Looks pretty sleak, but...
The iPhone looks pretty amazing from what I have seen. Our base director loves his gadgets (has an O2 right now with Microsoft Windows Mobile), so I am sure that if Apple releases it in Australia we will be seeing one around here soon.
It will probably prove to be an interesting challenge for us in IT to support the device with our own networks. As with other mobile devices there will be security concerns, connectivity questions, etc.

No doubt most of these problems can be overcome, but it will just be a matter of figuring it all out...
iPhone is special why?
To be honest, I dont see what is so special about the iPhone, maybe you could tell me what about it makes it any better than any other out there?
It can play MP3's - Sony Ericsson Walkman phone comes with 4GB standard, and the old ones are expandable to that.
No 3rd party software, closed system, cannot read office docs, no G3 network, or Wifi
The carrier entertainment services (like TV or streaming video/music) will not work on iPhone
iPhone doesn’t include GPS or a navigation option, Google Maps is cool, but both RIM and Palm offer it too
2MP camera, thats getting pretty old these days, every phone has that.
So again, what can the iphone do that others cannot, or even that it does better than others?

Hi,
as far as I know the only thing that is really different/special/unique, how ever you want to call it, is the touch screen. I'm not aware of another PDA/Smartphone with that. If that's a necessary feature I leave to everyone's personal opinion.

It isn't - what is special is that every other phone on the market is lame, and Apple has decided to grace this phone with their special powers, making it beautiful, easy to use, and wonderful. Remember Mp3 players before the iPod? I don't. Will we remember phones before the iPhone? Who knows.
What's special is that Apple has taken the perfectionism and talent that created the iPod and made a cellphone. And that is why I am excited about it.

Computer companies scrambling?
Sorry Calvin, just had to get another one in there, how is it that Apple has anyone scrambling to keep up, they are using Intel processors now that other brands have been using for years, and Windows runs faster on their computers than the MAC OS!!
I cannot see anywhere, other than iPods that have had anyone scrambling to catch up with.
Even their components in their computers are generally 6 months behind other brands. All the major players had the Core 2 processors in them the day they were released it took Apple literally 6 months to catch up with that one.
Their wifi still doesnt use n draft. Not that that is a huge issue, but again, behind the 8 ball there.
The RAM is slower, I mean honestly...

One thing what comes to my mind is since the switch to Intel processors you mentioned, Apple announced that their Macs up to 4 times faster. Hmmm, OK, so what was it before? Just better than snail mail? Stone Age technology? A piece of junk? Anyways, benchmark test shown more likely an average of 2 times faster compared to before. Even that is something what makes me wonder, if that's true, how could ppl work before with their computers? I don't really believe in the increase of speed by simply change to a different processor type but there are other factors.
Apple was stuck with processor speed because it was not possible to keep the processors cool anymore. The G5's never made it into any notebook for exact that reason, it was not possible to keep them cool enough in a notebook. Now with Intel they see an increase in speed again by using faster processors or such with multi core.
Also, basically the cooler a processor the faster it works. A server room is not cooled down to 20° because a processor would fire up when it's 30°... So, now that they are able to keep their processors cooler it runs smoother.
However, I honestly don't really care if a computer is running a bit faster or slower. Probably just a very few of us, if any, have a dedicated computer for a very special task. I'm not talking about server but our all day work desktop or laptop. Means you will always find something that runs faster, better, smoother on one of the computers.
Just by the processor they choose you can see that Apple cares more about market share than really building specialized machines. Apple is know for their media stuff which basically requires a lot floating point operations. AMD processors are actually better at that than Intel, besides the fact that AMD's processors have really multiple cores not like the Intel's with 2 cores in one.
Anyways, what Apple is doing is not necessarily bad stuff. They have a stable OS, works pretty good and intuitive and it comes with a lot of programs that do what they basically should. Well, some things are strange to me but that has a lot to do with personal preference how I would like to see things to work. But what I really don't like is that it seems that Apple learned a lot from Microsoft how to advertise things and let programs play together even with the OS. That's the way how MS got themselves into trouble and that's the way how Apple can potentially soon face the same sort of trouble. I'm thinking of viruses, spyware, etc.
Also, by doing this and making it hard or even impossible for third party products to link in I'm asking myself if Apple is on the best way to become another monopolist. You might want to check this article: Norway outlaws iTunes

Apple Robots
Hey I intend no offense with this comment, but as the number of MAC users increase on my base, I started to notice that MAC users kind of walk the same way, carry their laptops the same way and are very anoying when they start praising their machines... I can actually spot a MAC user (without his computer) in a crowd now. Also the overuse of shortcut keys gets to me..
I don't want an Ipod, too common, everyone has one... The Iphone looks really cool, but it looks way too "MAC(y)" . In terms of quality Apple stuff is really high specs no question for me about it!
I'm personaly a Linux lover, and I agree that Vista is the attempt to make Windows look like KDE with a MAC feel, but in no way I want to look and act like every geek in this world that uses Linux. Maybe the Apple lovers are trying too hard to convince us that having an Apple device is cool and makes you look cool but (no offence intended) they are becoming like robots.
By the way, I said phone companies scrambling!

To be honest if Apple was so amazing and better, then why dont more people use them? Why dont they have any server technologies if their security is so solid? Why are they making bootcamp software so they can use Windows OS? and why are they using the same hardware as the rest of the PC world now, and why do they still charge so much more?
If you can answer these questions, then Ill consider Apple on my next purchase.
